Thanks for the praise, Richard! It means a lot! I also bought the book after returning the audiobook to the library. That’s a great idea about typing his chapters. I may try that myself.

I will take a look at A Gift of Time by Jerry Merritt. Thanks for the heads up on that.

I’m in complete agreement with you. It’s one of my favorite audio books of 2018. In fact, I liked the book so much I bought the hardbound edition. As part of my pre-writing ritual I type a chapter a day from the novel in an attempt to capture some of his writing techniques and style. It’s also a great way to re-experience a novel you love. It’s good that he writes short chapters or I’d spend most of my time typing the novel instead of writing.

I’ll suggest another audio book that I think is just as engrossing as this one, also time travel: A Gift of Time by Jerry Merritt. The narrator is superb. You might want to check it out.

It’s one of the best science fiction stories I’ve ever encountered and affected me in a profound way. I named my Shepard after myself and made him look like me because I wanted as much immersion as possible. I felt everything I did. All of the consequences. Decisions I made would haunt me later in a time when I nothing else to be concerned about. I felt I had actually formed relationships with the characters and every decision mattered. You fall in love with the characters and from 1-3, you’re on a journey where everything is on the line. The emotions intensify over the games. People change, but in the end, they’re still who they were before. Every decision made changes the probability of an outcome a little bit and mass effect portrays this beautifully. I found myself wishing I lived in this universe. I wrote about it. I found myself going there in my dreams. This video you posted was quite fantastic in my opinion, in ccapturing the intensity, emotions, and beauty of the series.

Mass effect enters your life as a fun time killer. It exits as a long journey, winding to an end, that has changed you; for better or worse.

And another interesting web site to explore. Allowing Tali to die is a direct path to gulping fear and guilt. Then Garrus clinches it when he says, I never got the chance to see her face, but I always thought there was an angel under there.

Great story. It is amazing how the ME characters live on in our hearts and minds. I remember the time I sided with Legion and Tali died. I literally could not sleep the entire night and honestly thought about her and her passing as if she was a real person. The game really makes you care about the characters in a way no other game has done for me.

I wrote a short Mass Effect fanfic once. Here it is: https://loschaos.com/ashley-williams-battle-for-london-mass-effect-3/

Yes, you made me cry. How has ME touched me? I carried that icky heavy feeling of grief with me for a year after the ending of ME 3. The characters live in my heart and in my world (headcanon) Commander Shepard and his crew are living it up in the Citadel Apartment and Shepard is standing at the piano practicing the tune Liara taught him.

I also wrote several fanfiction stories to get over it. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7932998/1/An-Earth-Left-to-Save is one of the stories.

This is an excellent read, which explores the ethics of immortality though artificial means.

Comment on Review of Neal Stephenson’s Novel Seveneves by Kyle Pollard https://offworlders.com/review-of-neal-stephensons-novel-seveneves/#comment-1051 Tue, 06 Jun 2017 23:51:07 +0000 https://offworlders.com/?p=13762#comment-1051 In reply to David Nadas.

I both agree and disagree with you. Can I have it both ways? Five thousand years is indeed a considerable amount of time to pass between part two and three. However, I found it fascinating to see the results of the selective genetic reconstruction of the human race and get a glimpse into the society and habitations created after abandoning Earth. And besides, as I mentioned in my review, I was having such a fun time reading the book I wanted to stay in that universe awhile longer and enjoy the view. I also found it interesting to get a glimpse into a society living so close to the stories of its own creation – but yeah – five thousand years is a huge leap between sections. What I want to know is what happens to the splinter group that lights out for Mars? That could be a book in itself.

I seriously doubt I could relate to anything 5,000 years ago, let alone in the future at the speed of Moore’s Law. That said, I still liked it.

Thanks, Otto! It was fun to write. I know the review has a rather serious tone. Decided to do it that way because after I finished the novel that was the feeling I was left with. That is, I could not help but feel that it was an extremely fun book that did a bang-up job of hiding a pretty crappy dystopian existence. I am planning a lighter post on the novel featuring the aspects of the novel that were indeed fun – the music, the quests, that sort of thing.

It might be a long wait as the lawsuit has halted production. I have not heard any news that the film is on again.
