The plot of the novel revolves around the intelligence agent Race Cargill, and a conflict on a mysterious planet called Wolf that is populated with non-human and half-human inhabitants. When a door in space opens a blood-feud threatens to destroy the Terran Empire.

“The Door Through Space is a science fiction novel by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It is not part of her Darkover book series, but Darkover is mentioned (as another planet) in passing in the book; and many Darkover elements appear in the book (red sun, Dry Towns with chained women, catmen and other nonhumans, Terran Empire trade cities, Ghost Wind, etc.). It was first published in book form in English by Ace Books in 1961, bound tête-bêche with Rendezvous on a Lost World by A. Bertram Chandler.
