Sci-Fi Short of the Week: “Glow” by Douglas Jessup

“Glow” is a masterfully shot film that won the 2014 Panavision Future Filmmaker Award. The idea for the film came in a vision to Douglas Jessup — who it just so happens was in need of a thesis project to complete his M.F.A degree at the University of Southern California. The film revolves around three shady looking characters who check into a motel located in the middle of nowhere. One of the three sits in the car for days on end while the other two guests remain inside motel room 13. Strangely, shortly after their arrival the electricity surges intermittently and causes the hotel lights to flicker. As with many sci-fi short films, “Glow” was shot to generate interest and desire in people to want to see more. Indeed, another short film titled “The Garden” used this technique and was recently picked up by Warner Brothers and may be made into a new science fiction series. Let’s hope this happens with “Glow” as the film is tantalizing and yet not full of substance. I for one would certainly like to see more.
