Farscape Movie Script Confirmed at WonderCon:
Are you still reeling from the crushing blow dealt when Farscape was cancelled in 2002? Reasons commonly cited: Too expensive to produce; Declining ratings after a time change from the 9 to 10 PM time slot; Uncomfortable network executives losing sleep over the shows artistically driven obsession with pushing the envelope; A change in direction for the network to formulaic easy to produce paranormal type programming. Any way you look at it, the decision to cancel the show was deeply flawed and pissed off a lot of people, including yours truly.
After the Save Farscape Campaign managed to secure funding for the three hour miniseries: “Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars,” no more seasons of “Farscape” were ever produced for television. Fans were left to grow old in darkened living rooms watching reruns from DVD, clutching brandy snifters in now shaking hands, with no hope in sight.
That was until the recent announcement at WonderCon by “Farscape” creator Rockne S. O’Bannon that a new script will be written. The plot of the script, according to O’Bannon, will examine the relationship between Aeryn and John’s son who is imbued with unique powers. These powers make the son the target of unnamed foes. The son will reunite with John and Aeryn onboard Moya. O’Bannon did not identify any additional characters to return to the world of “Farscape.” Devotees of the series are hopeful that the movie will be made, become a smash hit, and spark enough concern to take the series back to television. It’s my understanding that the original cast members Ben Browder and Claudia Black are to pass the torch to a younger generation.
Of course, there is no guarantee that a movie will ever be made. The road to hell is paved with scripts that never make it to the theatre. Its a start though! Personally, I hope the decision to have central characters Browder and Black as placeholders to pass the torch to youngsters is reversed. Fifty is the new thirty. Claudia Black is as beautiful as ever, Ben Browder is still in shape, so I am not sure what gives with the decision to have them act as torch bearers passing the torch to a younger generation of actors.
Oh well, I guess I should recite this Buddhist quote and move on:
“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.”
