The Hanging Stranger is an early work by Philip K Dick. The plot revolves around a man named Loyce who finds a dead stranger that was hung from a lamp post with a noose around his neck. Finding this dead man forces Loyce to think differently about the town he lives in and the people that surround him. Everything Loyce thought about his home town, and its inhabitants, was wrong. He discovers shape shifting insectoid aliens morphing into human form are taking over the city.
